COP 30 in Belém: A Milestone for Sustainable Development and Global Visibility of the Amazon
The selection of Belém as the host city for the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 30) in 2025 marks a historic moment not only for the city but for the entire Amazon region. This event, which will bring together world leaders, environmental experts, activists, and representatives from various sectors, is set to transform the capital of Pará into a global epicenter for discussions on sustainability, biodiversity, and climate change.
Additionally, the event is expected to inject millions of reais into the local economy, bringing both direct and indirect benefits to various sectors. Since the official announcement of the host city in 2023, hotels, restaurants, transportation services, and tourism operators have already begun preparing to welcome participants. Estimates from the State Government indicate that around R$ 4 billion in investments will be made, significantly impacting the economy, infrastructure, and international visibility.
“COP 30 is a unique opportunity for Belém to establish itself as a global destination for sustainable tourism. Beyond the immediate financial benefits, the event will leave a lasting legacy in infrastructure and professional training that will benefit the city for years to come,” says Raimundo Fabrício Paixão, an environmental law expert and professor at Wyden.
Urban Infrastructure
Preparations for the event are already driving investments in urban infrastructure in Belém.
Mobility projects, such as the expansion of public transportation, road revitalization, the growth of the hotel sector, and improvements in sanitation—including upgrades to the Ver-o-Peso market, one of the city’s most iconic landmarks—are being prioritized.
“Belém’s infrastructure is undergoing a much-needed transformation. COP 30 is accelerating these projects, and these changes will improve the quality of life for residents while leaving a lasting legacy for the city and the Amazon region. This will not only boost tourism but also promote sustainable and efficient construction,” says Kelvin Almeida, an architect and professor at Estácio.
Strengthening the Environmental Agenda
Hosting COP 30 places Belém on the global stage, attracting investments, research initiatives, and international partnerships.
“This is a chance to show the world that the Amazon is essential for the planet’s climate balance. Additionally, the event will amplify the voices of traditional communities and Indigenous peoples, who are the guardians of the region’s knowledge and biodiversity,” highlights an environmental expert.
Another positive impact of the Conference will be the promotion of education and environmental awareness. Schools, universities, and civil society organizations are already developing projects and activities related to the event, encouraging discussions on climate change, sustainability, and the global importance of the Amazon.
“This is a unique opportunity to engage the local population and academic community in discussions about the future of our planet. We believe that Belém will emerge as a leader in Brazil’s green agenda, committed to the health of the world,” says Adriano Remor, director of Faci Wyden.
